What a Business Analyst actually does
A BA is the bridge between business and engineering. On any given day, a BA is running a stakeholder workshop, writing a BRD or FRD, refining user stories, drawing wireframes in Figma or Balsamiq, walking engineers through acceptance criteria, or clarifying edge cases in a sprint call. The role is heavier on documentation and requirements clarity than on product strategy — that is what makes it the perfect launchpad into product.
The 10 skills every BA needs in 2026
- Requirements elicitation — running interviews, workshops and JAD sessions to extract what a business actually needs.
- Documentation — BRD (Business Requirements), FRD (Functional Requirements), SRS, LOS (Loan Origination System spec), API documents, EPICs.
- User stories — "As a [user] I want [action] so that [outcome]", with clear acceptance criteria.
- Wireframing — low-fi flows in Figma or Balsamiq. You do not need to be a designer.
- Process modelling — BPMN, swimlanes, current-state vs future-state maps.
- SQL — enough to write SELECT/JOIN/GROUP-BY queries to pull your own numbers.

- Stakeholder management — reading a room, saying no diplomatically, driving alignment.

The 90-day plan from zero to first BA role
Days 1-30 — Foundations
Learn SDLC, Agile vs Waterfall, Scrum ceremonies. Read Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK) — skim, do not memorise. Build a template pack: BRD, FRD, user story format, wireframe checklist. Follow 15 BAs on LinkedIn.
Days 31-60 — Build artifacts
Pick 3 real-ish projects — e.g. an insurance claim flow, a food-delivery repeat-order feature, a loan origination system. For each, write a BRD, FRD, 10-20 user stories, and 3-5 wireframes. Days 61-90 — Apply and interview
Rewrite your resume in BA idiom (see the resume guide). Apply to 40 roles with referrals from your LinkedIn network. Do 5-8 mock BA interviews. Target companies in your strongest domain — banking, fintech, insurance, healthcare, e-commerce.
Business Analyst salary in India (2026)
- Junior BA / Trainee (0-2 yrs): ₹5-10 LPA
- Business Analyst (2-5 yrs): ₹10-22 LPA
- Senior BA (5-8 yrs): ₹18-32 LPA
- Lead BA / BA Consultant (8+ yrs): ₹25-45 LPA
- Head of BA / BA Practice: ₹40 LPA+
Compensation varies by industry: fintech and insurance pay 15-30% more; IT services pay 20% less than product companies. Domain expertise (LOS in banking, claims in insurance, EMR in healthcare) is the biggest lever after 3 years.
Pick a domain in year 2
Generalist BAs plateau around ₹12-15 LPA. Domain BAs — someone who knows banking KYC end-to-end, or insurance underwriting, or telecom OSS/BSS — command 30-60% more. Pick your domain by year 2 and go deep. Build artifacts specific to that domain: a full LOS spec, a claims workflow BRD, a UPI merchant onboarding FRD.

- Docs: Confluence, Notion, Google Docs
- Backlog: Jira, Azure DevOps, Linear
- Wireframing: Figma, Balsamiq, Whimsical
- Modelling: Draw.io, Lucidchart, Visio (BPMN)
- Data: SQL (any dialect), Excel/Sheets, Metabase
- APIs: Postman, Swagger, Bruno
- AI copilots: Claude, ChatGPT, Notion AI, Cursor
The BA-to-PM transition (12-24 months)
The most common career move for BAs in India. To make it happen:
- Own outcomes, not tasks — every quarter, own one feature end-to-end.
- Learn discovery — run 5 user interviews a quarter and write up findings.
- Build metric fluency — pick one product metric and become the go-to person for it.
- Move sideways if you cannot move up — smaller product companies are the fastest promotion lane.

Certifications (do you need them?)
Nice-to-haves, not essentials. If your target is enterprise BA or IT services, ECBA (entry) and CBAP (senior) from IIBA carry weight. For Scrum-focused BA/PO roles, CSPO or PSPO help. For pure product roles, no certification matters more than a strong portfolio.
