The one-line difference
If you remember only one thing: PM decides what to build and why. BA translates that into how it should work. PO drives the team that actually builds it. In practice the roles overlap heavily, and in small companies one person often does all three.
The Product Manager (PM)
The PM owns the outcome of a product or feature area. Their day is 40% talking to users and stakeholders, 30% writing (PRDs, strategy docs, updates), 20% working with design and engineering, and 10% looking at data. See what a PM actually does for the full day-in-the-life.
Deliverables: product vision, roadmap, PRDs, launch plans, success metrics.
Reports to: Head of Product, VP Product or founder.
Common titles: APM, Product Manager, Senior PM, Group PM, Principal PM, Director of Product, VP Product.
India salary: ₹8-22 LPA (APM) → ₹80 LPA+ (senior).
The Business Analyst (BA)
The BA is the bridge between business stakeholders and engineering. They translate a business need into structured, unambiguous requirements. In India, BA is the most common entry point into product because IT services and enterprise product companies hire BAs in volume.
Deliverables: BRD (Business Requirements Document), FRD (Functional Requirements Document), user stories, wireframes, process flows, LOS/API documents, EPICs.
Reports to: Delivery Manager, Product Owner or Head of BA.
Common titles: Business Analyst, Senior BA, Lead BA, BA Consultant, Product Analyst.
India salary: ₹6-10 LPA (entry) → ₹25 LPA+ (lead).

The Product Owner (PO)
The PO is a Scrum role. They own the product backlog for a single Agile team, groom stories, run sprint planning, sign off on acceptance criteria, and represent the customer inside the team. POs are common in enterprises, banks, and Scaled Agile (SAFe) organisations.
Deliverables: prioritised backlog, refined user stories, sprint goals, release plans, acceptance criteria.
Reports to: Product Manager, Head of Product or Programme Manager.
Common titles: Product Owner, Senior PO, Lead PO, SAFe Product Owner.
India salary: ₹12-28 LPA typical, higher in banking and fintech.

| Time horizon | Quarters + years | Weeks + months | Sprint (2 weeks) |
| Owns strategy | Yes | Rarely | Team-level only |

Which role should you target?
Target BA if you are a fresher, non-tech background, or transitioning from support/QA/testing. Hiring pool is largest, entry bar is lowest, and it opens doors into PM and PO within 2-3 years.
Target PM if you already have 3+ years in engineering, design, consulting, or a related product-adjacent role, and can show product artifacts.
Target PO if you enjoy the delivery cadence of Agile, love working with a single tight team, and want a certification-friendly path (CSPO/PSPO). Great in enterprise, banking and fintech.
The typical career path in India
- Business Analyst (0-3 yrs)
- Senior BA / Product Owner (2-5 yrs)
- Associate Product Manager (3-5 yrs)
- Product Manager (5-7 yrs)
- Senior Product Manager / Group PM (7-10 yrs)
- Head of Product / VP Product (10+ yrs)
Not everyone follows this path. Engineers, designers and founders can enter at APM or PM directly. But if you are a fresher or career-switcher, this is the highest-probability route.
