How to pick a PM course (4-question framework)

Before comparing courses, filter with these four questions:

  1. Will I finish with a portfolio? Not slides, not certificates — actual PRDs, wireframes and case studies. If not, skip it.
  2. Is there live mentorship? Recorded courses at ₹10,000+ almost never justify their price. Mentorship is what moves the needle.
  3. Do alumni get real outcomes? Ask to see the last 20 alumni's LinkedIn. If a course cannot show placements or transitions, walk away.
  4. Is AI woven through the curriculum? In 2026, any PM course still teaching only pre-AI workflows is already stale.

Live cohort programs (most effective)

PM Codex — BA Practical Masterclass

Format: 6-week live cohort with weekend sessions, real project artifacts, 1:1 mentoring and lifetime recordings. Price: ₹24,999 (currently ₹29,999). Best for: aspiring BAs and PMs in India who want the fastest realistic path with a portfolio at the end. Verdict: highest artifact-to-cost ratio of any Indian program we have benchmarked. Full details on the home page.

Product School

Well-known US brand with cohort and self-paced options. Global-quality content but pricing is USD and outcomes are US-market-oriented. Good if you are targeting international roles.

Institute-run cohorts (IIM, ISB, upGrad, Great Learning)

Longer (4-9 months), more expensive (₹1-3 lakhs), stronger brand on the resume. Content quality varies wildly — some are lecture-heavy and light on portfolio. Best if you need the institute name for switching companies.

Self-paced and MOOCs (best if you are on a budget)

Executive MBAs with product tracks

ISB, IIMB, IIMA and similar programs are strong if you want a broader business grounding and a network. Expect ₹15-30 lakhs and 12-24 months. Overkill if your only goal is a first PM job — the ROI is much better with a focused ₹25,000 cohort plus a great portfolio.

1:1 mentoring vs group courses

Mentoring is not a substitute for structured curriculum, but structured curriculum without mentoring rarely converts. The strongest programs combine both — a taught cohort with individual mentor time. If you cannot afford a full program, book 3-5 focused mentoring calls (₹500-₹1,500 each) at inflection points: resume review, portfolio review, mock interview, offer negotiation. See our mentoring options.

Should I take a BA course or a PM course first?

In India, if you are early-career, start with a BA-focused course. Reasons: (1) BA hiring pool is much bigger, (2) BA skills — requirements, user stories, EPICs, wireframes — are exactly what junior PMs are hired to do, (3) you can transition from BA to PM within 2-3 years. 7 red flags in PM course marketing

  1. "Guaranteed job" claims — no reputable program can guarantee this.
  2. Overpriced certificates with no portfolio output.
  3. Instructors with no shipped product experience.
  4. Curriculum with no AI module in 2026.
  5. No public alumni list, no LinkedIn proof.
  6. Pressure sales, fake "seats remaining" counters.
  7. Content that is 90% recorded video with no live component.

The verdict

For an aspiring BA or PM in India in 2026, the best value comes from a 4-8 week live cohort under ₹35,000 that includes real portfolio artifacts, mock interviews, and lifetime access. Reserve MBAs for career pivots at the 3-5 year mark. Reserve US programs for candidates targeting US-based product roles.

Frequently asked questions

Are product management courses worth it in India?
The right course, yes. A course pays for itself if it (1) forces you to build a real portfolio, (2) gives you a network of PMs, and (3) has clear mentorship. Pure lecture-based MOOCs rarely justify the cost.
Which is the best product management certification?
For most roles in India, no certification is required. If your target is Product Owner in an enterprise, CSPO or PSPO helps. For general PM roles, hiring managers care about your portfolio and interview performance, not the badge.
Do I need an MBA to become a product manager?
No. See our full breakdown in the How to Become a Product Manager guide. Most PMs hired at Indian product companies do not have an MBA.
How much does a good PM course cost in India?
Live cohort programs range Rs 20,000-1,20,000 in India. MOOCs are free to Rs 15,000. Executive MBAs are Rs 8-25 lakhs. Value is not correlated with price — look at outcomes and portfolio output.
