The resume structure that works

In this exact order:

  1. Header — name, one-line title ("Aspiring Product Manager | ex-BA @ HDFC"), city, phone, email, LinkedIn.
  2. Summary — 3 lines, positioning statement, not a bio.
  3. Skills — 3 columns of keywords: Product (PRD, roadmap, discovery), Technical (SQL, APIs, Figma), Tools (Jira, Amplitude, Mixpanel).
  4. Experience — most recent first, 3-5 bullets each.
  5. Portfolio / Projects — 2-4 real artifacts with 1 line each. Non-negotiable if you are transitioning.
  6. Education — school, degree, year. One line.
  7. Certifications — only if relevant (CSPO, PSPO, PMP, CBAP).

The bullet formula that beats ATS and human reviewers

[Verb] + [what you did] + [how / with whom] + [measurable outcome]

Bad: "Worked on onboarding flow with design team."

Good: "Redesigned onboarding for 240K MAU fintech app in partnership with 2 designers and 6 engineers, lifting D7 retention from 32% to 41% (+9pp) in one release."

Every bullet should have a number in it. If a bullet has no number, it should not exist. See our full PM career guide for how to build the portfolio behind these numbers.

The 10 ATS rules for 2026

  1. Use a single-column layout. Two-column resumes break parsing.
  2. No graphics, no icons, no photos, no tables (unless plain).
  3. Stick to fonts ATS reads: Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, Inter.
  4. Save and upload as PDF unless the JD says otherwise.
  5. Name the file "FirstName-LastName-Product-Manager.pdf".
  6. Repeat the JD's exact keywords 3-4 times across your bullets and skills.
  7. Use standard section headings: Experience, Skills, Education.
  8. Do not put critical text inside a header/footer — many ATS strip these.
  9. Spell out abbreviations at least once: "PRD (Product Requirements Document)".
  10. Test on jobscan.co or a free ATS checker before applying.

If you are a BA transitioning to PM

Reframe every bullet in the product idiom. Instead of "documented requirements", write "translated 3 stakeholder needs into a shipped feature that reduced settlement time by 22%". Instead of "attended sprint planning", write "prioritised a 40-story backlog across 3 releases; team hit 92% sprint predictability". See our BA-to-PM roadmap for the full transition playbook.

The portfolio section (what most candidates skip)

If you have not shipped a PM-titled role yet, this section is the reason you get the interview. List 2-4 real artifacts with a public link (Notion, Google Doc, personal site). Examples:

Our BA Practical Masterclass ships every student with 30+ portfolio-ready artifacts. See the curriculum.

Writing the summary line

3 lines maximum. Structure:

  1. Who you are today — "Business Analyst with 3 years in fintech."
  2. What you have shipped — "Led requirements for 4 revenue features that added ₹1.2Cr ARR."
  3. What you are aiming for — "Targeting APM roles at consumer product companies in Bengaluru."

Frequently asked questions

Should a PM resume be 1 page or 2 pages?
Under 5 years of experience: 1 page. 5-10 years: 1-2 pages. Over 10 years: 2 pages max. Every line has to earn its place.
Does a PM resume need a photo?
For most companies in India, no. Photos take up space and can trigger unconscious bias. Save the space for impact bullets.
How many keywords should I include?
Read the JD, extract 8-12 domain-specific keywords, and weave them naturally into your bullets. Do not keyword-stuff — ATS is smarter than 2019.
Do I need a cover letter?
For most Indian product roles, no. If a company explicitly asks, write a 200-word one focused on why this company specifically.
