STAR + self-accountability
Model answer
Use STAR — Situation, Task, Action, Result. Pick a story where you changed your OWN behaviour, not one where the stakeholder was 'unreasonable'. Interviewers hire for self-awareness.
What great candidates actually do
- Name the stakeholder by role, not by name — professionalism signal.
- The action should include something you tried that didn't work.
- Quantify the result — days saved, scope aligned, defect rate.
Traps to avoid
- Naming the solution before the problem — always restate the goal in one sentence first.
- Answering without structure — pick a framework out loud, then execute it.
- Skipping the trade-off — every strong answer names what you would NOT do and why.
