What's the difference between a BRD, FRD and SRS — and when would you use each?

Framework
why → what → how (traceability)
Model answer
BRD answers WHY (business need), FRD answers WHAT (features and flows), SRS answers HOW (system-level, testable specs). You write them in that order, and they nest — every FRD requirement traces back to a BRD objective.
What great candidates actually do
- BRD is owned by the business sponsor; FRD by the BA; SRS by the BA + tech lead.
- In agile shops, BRD becomes a product brief, FRD becomes epics, SRS becomes stories.
- Traceability matrix links every SRS line to an FRD requirement to a BRD objective.
Traps to avoid
- Naming the solution before the problem — always restate the goal in one sentence first.
- Answering without structure — pick a framework out loud, then execute it.
- Skipping the trade-off — every strong answer names what you would NOT do and why.
