anchor high on evidence
Model answer
Give a range anchored to research, not gut feel. 'Based on my experience and the market range for this role in this city, I'm looking at 18–22 LPA.' If they push for a number, name the top of your range — you can only negotiate down.
What great candidates actually do
- Never disclose your current salary first — deflect politely.
- Use pmcodex.com/salary-calculator or Glassdoor + AmbitionBox for anchor data.
- Total comp includes bonus, ESOPs, insurance — ask about all three.
Traps to avoid
- Naming the solution before the problem — always restate the goal in one sentence first.
- Answering without structure — pick a framework out loud, then execute it.
- Skipping the trade-off — every strong answer names what you would NOT do and why.
